Fountain
Fountain runs hourly hiring from a phone application to the offer, with three AI helpers. Rules you write can reject applicants with no person involved, so who decides is up to your settings. Its gaps are in records, from deleting AI interview data to moving old documents across. Fountain prices by quote, plus Cue credits and add-ons.
Fountain runs hourly hiring with AI, and you set how much it decides
Fountain handles apply, screen, schedule and offer for hourly roles. Its AI agents can act on applicants. The rules you set decide how far they go alone.
You fill many similar hourly roles. You want applicants to apply by phone and book their own interview. You will write clear rules and give someone ownership of them. You can accept a price you learn from a quote.
You need a price on a web page before you talk to anyone. You need your admins to delete AI interview recordings as a standard step today. You fill only a few roles a year.
Fountain prices by quote, tailored to the products you buy. Cue, its AI agent, draws on bought Cue credits for real work. Anna, its AI interviewer, is an add-on.
From first tap to offer, and who decides along the way
Hourly hiring has a short path. An applicant finds a job, answers a few questions, books an interview and gets an offer. Fountain covers that whole path. Applicants apply on a phone. They book their own interview in a Scheduler stage. A mobile app called Hire Go lets a store or site manager work from a phone. They can open a job, review candidates and schedule interviews. They can also send offers and start onboarding. Fountain hands an accepted offer to onboarding automatically.
Three AI helpers sit on top of that path. Candidate AI is a chat assistant. It answers applicant questions and helps them finish the application form by SMS, WhatsApp or a chat window. Anna is the AI interviewer. It interviews by phone or in a browser. It asks follow-up questions when answers are short or unclear. It then returns a score, a transcript, a recording and a summary. Anna is an add-on that Fountain turns on at your request. You can use it on only some of your openings.
Cue is the third helper, and it works for your staff. It is a chat assistant across Fountain’s products. From a prompt, Cue can move applicants and send messages. It can run a saved prompt every day, week or month without being asked. It also connects to outside tools such as Microsoft 365, Notion and Asana.
The question that matters most is who decides. On Fountain’s applicant tracking page, Cue screens applicants, books interviews and moves people to offer on its own. It also screens every applicant when they apply and ranks them by fit. In Fountain’s help centre, Cue has a narrower job. For operational tasks, Cue displays a preview of its changes. A user then approves or adjusts them before Cue acts. Cue cannot take actions beyond that user’s permissions. Ask to see both modes in the demo, with your own approval steps turned on.
Rules are a second way to decide, and they can reject people. A rule stage can skip a stage, fast-track an applicant or reject one on conditions you set. One example moves an applicant to Rejected when an answer does not fit your requirement. An idle rule moves applicants who do nothing in a set time. They go to a stage such as Reject or On Hold. Choosing a rejection reason sends the matching rejection message to the applicant. A person writes these rules once. After that, they act on each applicant who meets the conditions.
Anna follows a stricter line. Anna does not move candidates to Approved or Rejected on its own. Rules on an AI Interview stage cannot pick Approved, Rejected or On Hold. Fountain also tells customers not to build rules that move candidates to Approved or Rejected from Anna’s results. A different help article sets out a score rule. It moves candidates who score 4 or 5 to the next stage without waiting on a reviewer. The same article adds that AI regulations prevent automated hiring decisions based on AI assessment results. Fountain treats moving to the next stage and approving as separate choices. Ask which of your stages count as a hiring decision.
The English rating is a signal, not a gate. Anna assesses each candidate’s spoken English on a language scale called CEFR during the interview. That level never moves a candidate to Approved or Rejected on its own. An Unknown rating does not mean the candidate is unqualified. So read the rating alongside the rest of the interview.
Our guide to applicant tracking systems covers how the rest of this market handles the same decision.
Where Fountain works in your favour
Six strengths are worth checking in the demo. Some save your managers time, some give you control over the AI, and some lower the risk of the purchase.
Applicants and managers both work from a phone, in many languages
Fountain designed its hiring product for hourly work. Applicants apply on a phone and book their own interview. Fountain also handles the offer letter. Store and site managers run hiring from the Hire Go phone app. Hire Go offers 37 language options. The chat assistant for applicants recognises more than 80 languages. Fountain has processed more than 91 million applicants and more than 14 million hires, across more than 75 countries. That matters when your applicants and managers do not share a first language or a desk.
You can put a person in front of the AI at each step
Control matters most where the AI acts. You can require each new opening to be approved before it goes live. An offer can route through approvers before it reaches the applicant. For Cue, you can set approval steps, budget limits and override rules. Cue cannot take actions beyond the permissions of the person who asked. Cue outcomes go into an activity log that your team can review. So you can see what the AI did and who allowed it.
Candidates are told about the AI, but rules can still reject them
Fountain notifies candidates before they deal with AI and offers an opt-out to a human alternative. In July 2026 Fountain announced that human recruiters make every final hiring decision. Each of its agents identifies itself, and a person is always reachable. At Marsden Services, 74% of applicants choose the AI interview when it is offered. Fountain’s rule stages can still reject applicants on conditions you set. So agree in advance which rejections a person reviews.
Records reach SAP in real time, and other HR systems take more work
Fountain integrates with SAP SuccessFactors Recruiting, Employee Central and Onboarding 2.0. That sync is real time and runs both ways. For other HR systems, Fountain can send an automatic alert when an applicant reaches the Approved stage. Your team then maps the applicant fields into your own system. Fountain has integration pages for Workday, UKG, Oracle HCM and BambooHR. Oracle HCM is the closest to SAP, because employee and job data come in and hire information goes out. Fountain can pass new hire information into BambooHR. For Workday and UKG, ask which way data flows. Fountain also integrates with Deel. Checkr, Indeed and DocuSign cover background checks, job ads and document signing. So ask which of your systems get records both ways.
The security basics are in place
AI interviews put recordings and scores on a vendor’s servers, so security matters here. Fountain is SOC 2 certified and encrypts stored documents with AES-256. In November 2020 Fountain announced that an audit by The Cadence Group found zero exceptions. That result is about six years old, so ask for the current report. An account can be upgraded to servers that one customer alone uses. Anna is designed so that AI model providers do not keep customer or candidate data for training.
It is a funded company with a record in hourly hiring
You may keep hiring records with a vendor for years, so its staying power matters. Fountain was founded in 2014. It announced an $85 million Series C on 4 November 2021. On 15 June 2022 it announced a $100 million extension, which brought the total to $185 million. Funding does not guarantee a vendor will last. It does show that investors backed the company. In June 2023 Fountain bought the IP and talent of Clevy, a conversational AI provider. That fits a product built on chat helpers. In May 2026 Fountain announced a Gartner placement. Gartner named it a Niche Player in the 2026 Magic Quadrant for Talent Acquisition Suites. That is an outside view of the company. Ask Fountain what that placement means for your kind of hiring.
Where Fountain stops, from deleting AI interview data to moving old documents
Six limits are worth weighing before you sign. Some concern the data Anna collects and what you can delete. Others concern moving over from an old system and how people apply. They matter most to a Head of HR who answers for candidate data. Put each one to Fountain in the demo.
Deleting AI interview data is not a standard admin step today
Anna is Fountain’s AI interviewer. It produces reports, transcripts and recordings. Today, deleting them is not a standard admin step. Anna data has no universal default retention period either. So ask Fountain how a deletion is done, and put a retention period in the contract. Anyone who can view an applicant profile can also view the AI interview report and score. Check who holds that access.
Anna’s equal opportunity questions cannot be switched off in the standard set-up
Anna may ask a random sample of candidates demographic questions, to support fairness and regulatory audits. The standard set-up does not let you turn these questions off. Fountain uses the answers for compliance monitoring. Hiring managers do not use them to make hiring decisions. Tell candidates why the questions appear, so they are not surprised.
Phone interviews have no technical way to detect an AI voice assistant
For phone interviews there is no technical way to detect candidates who use AI voice assistants. Anna does flag candidates who repeatedly take an unusually long time to reply. Fountain treats that as a possible cheating risk. A slow reply is only a hint. So decide how much weight a phone score gets for your roles.
Clearing a candidate’s record does not erase the person
Clearing a field on an applicant profile is not a full erasure under GDPR or CCPA. Fountain has a separate call, used through its developer tools, that anonymises an applicant’s personal data. Clearing data in the hiring product also leaves the person’s records in Fountain’s Pool and Worker Profile products. Pool is where Fountain ranks talent for you to contact. If you receive an erasure request, ask which records Fountain covers.
Moving over from your old system leaves documents behind
Fountain’s spreadsheet import does not bring across CVs, certificates, signed documents or photos. Those need a separate migration project run through your Customer Success manager. A direct connector for supported systems is coming soon. Columns that Fountain does not recognise are dropped with no warning. So check the file after every import.
Text to Apply works only in the United States, and WhatsApp costs extra
Text to Apply lets applicants text a keyword to shortcode 464646 to start applying. It is available only in the United States. WhatsApp is an add-on that no base subscription includes. If you hire across borders, check which apply routes work in each country.
Where you hire decides which laws reach your use of Anna. Two cases show why. New York City’s Local Law 144 covers a tool that issues a score, classification or recommendation. The tool must substantially assist or replace a hiring decision. Our market guide covers the full law. Anna returns a score, and a rule can move candidates who score 4 or 5. A score like Anna’s can bring a tool under the law, depending on how you use it. The law asks for a bias audit. It defines that as an impartial evaluation by an independent auditor. Fountain’s bias mitigation during model development is not that audit. The city’s guidance is that the vendor that created the tool is not responsible for its bias audit. So the audit duty is yours. Fountain notifies candidates before they deal with AI. That helps with the notices the law asks for.
Illinois Public Act 103-0804 took effect on 1 January 2026. Using AI that has the effect of discriminating against a protected class in hiring is a civil rights violation. The duty falls on you, not on Fountain. Anna scores candidates, so check how this applies if you hire in Illinois. It is also a violation to fail to give notice that you use AI for that purpose. The Act tells the state’s Department of Human Rights to adopt rules on when and how to give that notice. Fountain notifies candidates before they deal with AI, which is a start. Ask how its message fits those rules once they are set.
It suits employers that fill many similar hourly roles
Fountain’s case for itself rests on employers that hire in volume across many sites. Fountain’s hiring product adapts whether you manage one store or a thousand. Each result below is Fountain’s own published account of that customer. Read each one for what it means for a buyer like you. Ask for a reference call that matches your roles.
Shoe Station Group cut time to hire from about 14 days to 6
Shoe Station Group operated 422 stores in 35 states and Puerto Rico as of 12 August 2026. Time to hire there fell from about 14 days to 6. Applicant drop-off fell from about 60% to 35%. The manager still meets the candidate and decides who joins. So the gain came from the steps around the decision, not from the decision itself.
Soothe needed 200 new providers a month
Soothe needed to onboard 200 new providers each month. At Soothe, time to hire dropped from 16 to 20 days to 3 to 4 days. That is a cut of about 80%. Ask Fountain to show the same pace at your volume.
Fetch grew monthly applicants from 2,350 to 10,000
Fetch delivers an average of 35,000 packages a day in 27 major US markets. Its applicant volume rose by 325%. More applicants means more screening, which is the work Cue and Anna are sold to do. If your volume swings like that, ask what Cue credits cost in your busiest week.
BELAY cut time to hire by 62% as a staffing agency
BELAY pairs clients with virtual assistants, bookkeepers, social media managers and accounting professionals. It adopted Fountain in October 2021. Its time to hire fell from 26 days to 10. If you run hiring for other firms, this is the closest story to yours.
SkyChefs onboarded 800 hires in two weeks
SkyChefs onboarded 800 hires in two weeks. It runs more than 30 kitchen locations. Two weeks is the pace to test. Ask for a reference call from a customer with a similar number of sites.
If you fill a few roles a year, none of these stories matches your week. You may not need agents built to screen thousands of applicants.
Fountain quotes the price, and Cue work draws on Cue credits
Fountain prices by quote. It tailors the price to the product suite each customer buys. The add-ons your account can use depend on its subscription. Anna and Fountain’s other talent agents, Emma and Sam, are packaged as add-ons. Exact pricing for the agents is by enquiry.
Cue work is billed in Cue credits. Cue is included in Fountain’s products. Guidance from Cue is free, but substantive work draws on a Cue credit balance. Pack sizes, the rate per Cue credit and totals appear on the Billing page in your account. Bought Cue credits are valid for 12 months. With no Cue credits left, Cue declines action requests and gives manual steps. You can turn on extra charges so that AI products keep running past a zero balance. Fountain then bills afterwards. Bulk work by Cue is priced per operation, not per record.
Other items carry their own fees, so ask for each as its own line in the quote. The W-4 and I-9 form stages are add-ons. These are US tax forms and work-eligibility checks. Reading CVs into the profile, which Fountain calls Advanced Resume Parsing, is an add-on discussed with your Customer Success contact. Fountain marks its Document Signing and Video Recording stages as carrying a usage fee. A ZipRecruiter posting has a fixed price of $149 that cannot be changed. WhatsApp is an add-on.
Leaving is the other half of the cost. You can export Anna interview data for an opening to a spreadsheet. Fountain’s developer tools offer custom export templates for applicant data. They also give access to secure file uploads, a PDF of each applicant and each applicant’s transition history. The Hire API is Fountain’s developer connection for managing applicants. Fountain offers it only in its Fountain package. Ask whether yours includes it. Deleting Anna’s records is not a standard admin step today, so ask Fountain how to remove them when you leave. Write the export format and a time window into the contract.
You could also run hiring steps with agents built on your own systems. We have mapped what that looks like. The HR Agent Map
Nine questions for the demo
These questions turn what Fountain’s public material leaves open into something in writing. Several of them belong in the contract too. Ask them in the demo and again before you sign.
- Which of our stages count as a hiring decision, and which rules can move people with no person involved? Good answer: A written list of stages and rules, with who can change each one.
- What will Cue cost us in our busiest week, and what happens when Cue credits run out? Good answer: A worked cost for our volume, and the extra-charge setting written into the order form.
- Can our admins delete Anna recordings, transcripts and reports, and how long do you keep them? Good answer: A deletion step our admins run, and a retention period in the contract.
- Which of your AI tools has an independent bias audit that we can publish for New York City? Good answer: A named audit, with a summary we are allowed to post.
- What do candidates see before an AI interview, and what do they get if they decline? Good answer: A message we can edit, and a human route that does not count against the candidate.
- Which documents come across from our old system, and who runs the migration? Good answer: A plan from our Customer Success contact, with dates and a cost.
- What does each add-on we need cost, from WhatsApp and Anna to the W-4 and I-9 stages? Good answer: One line in the quote for each add-on we need.
- Candidate AI chats are translated through OpenAI. An applicant’s chosen language is translated through Amazon Translate. The AI interview report comes from Alpharun. In which country does each one handle our candidates’ data? Good answer: A named list, each company with a country.
- Which of our HR systems get records both ways, and where do we map the fields ourselves? Good answer: A named list of systems, and the fields we must map.
Alternatives to Fountain
If Fountain comes off your shortlist, look at Paradox, Talkpush and Hireology. Each is sold for high-volume or frontline hiring. Each differs from Fountain on a point that matters to this decision.
Paradox sells a Conversational ATS that chats and texts with applicants. Offers go out by text and are accepted with a few taps. Workday completed its acquisition of Paradox in October 2025. If you already run Workday, ask how closely the two fit. If you do not, ask what the ownership means for you.
Talkpush is built for teams filling 500 to 50,000 roles a year. Its Autoflow tool messages, moves and shortlists candidates without recruiter input, within five minutes of a candidate entering a stage. That is a looser line than Anna’s, which does not move candidates to Approved or Rejected on its own. Ask where Autoflow stops.
Hireology is built for retail automotive, healthcare and hospitality. Warden AI monitors its AI Match and AI Interview scoring for disparate outcomes and publishes findings monthly. Hireology also has a Local Law 144 bias audit report for AI Interview, dated 5 October 2026. It covers sex and race or ethnicity. Warden tests Hireology’s models, not your own hiring decisions. That is the kind of audit evidence the New York City question above asks Fountain for.
Buying nothing is also a real choice. Fountain’s agents do their best work when many similar roles open often. If you fill a few roles each year, you may not need them. Our market guide covers the wider field.
