AI interview software for hiring in Europe and the UK
Start with Maki for hiring across Europe. Use Tengai instead if most of your hiring is in the Nordics. Add Employment Hero or Metaview Screening only if you already pay for the product behind them. Maki and Tengai quote a price after a call. Employment Hero lists A$199 a month. The EU already bans reading a candidate's emotion. From 2 December 2027, you also carry the user’s duties for hiring AI.
Employment Hero (UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand hiring, if you already pay for it) · Metaview Screening (if you already pay for it)
The EU already bans reading a candidate's emotion, and its new hiring duties start on 2 December 2027. Your recruiters can set Maki's filters to reject a candidate with no person reviewing that call.
Four of the five sellers are based in Europe or the UK
Tengai is Swedish. Maki is French. Metaview Screening and Spotted Zebra are both British. Employment Hero is Australian.
Maki keeps data mostly in the EU. Tengai keeps it in Sweden.
The seller’s country decides which law applies to a claim. Two things change your risk. They are whether a person decides, and whether there is a published bias audit.
| Product | Seller based in | Where the recording is kept | Reads emotion, face or tone? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tengai | Tengai AB, a Swedish company. | Sweden. Its compliance page names nowhere else. | No. Only the words a candidate says are scored. |
| Maki Mochi | MakiPeople SAS, based in Paris. | Mostly inside the EU. Its privacy policy allows some outside suppliers. | Only the words are scored for this interview. A separate gaze and voice check exists. Get Maki to confirm whether Mochi uses it. |
| Metaview Screening | Metaview Global Ltd, registered in England. Its majority owner is a Delaware company. | Not published. | No. It scores the transcript alone, whatever camera setting you choose. |
| Spotted Zebra | Spotted Zebra Solutions Ltd, a British company. | Not published. | Scores what a candidate says. Get Spotted Zebra to state whether it also reads tone, face or emotion. |
| Employment Hero | Employment Hero is Australian. It sells in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. | Not published. | Yes. It reviews a candidate’s audio and video together. It calls this "sentiment analysis." |
Maki fits most hiring across Europe
Maki is MakiPeople SAS, based in Paris. It scores only the words a candidate says for this interview. Recruiters can turn on filters, such as a missing work permit, that reject a candidate automatically. No person reviews that specific call. Maki's own product page says no candidate is ever auto-rejected. The filter is real, and a recruiter switches it on. Holistic AI audited Maki for bias in March 2026.
Tengai fits hiring in the Nordics
Tengai is a Swedish company, Tengai AB, and it keeps interview data in Sweden. Its spoken interview is in Swedish or English. Since 17 September 2026, it translates every question into Norwegian and Danish too. Tengai's own pages describe who decides two ways. Most say the recruiter always decides. One page says its framework can screen and recommend candidates on its own. Tengai publishes no outside bias audit.
Employment Hero and Metaview Screening fit if you already pay for them
Employment Hero sells its interview tool in the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. It sells nothing on the European mainland. It reviews a candidate's audio and video together, and calls this "sentiment analysis." Its own terms class the interview as high-risk AI and rule out automatic rejection. For Metaview Screening, the company on your contract depends on where your company is based. The European Economic Area is the EU plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. There, and in the UK or Switzerland, it is Metaview Global Ltd, registered in England.
Spotted Zebra publishes the least of the five
Spotted Zebra is British, Spotted Zebra Solutions Ltd. Its contracts follow English law. VerifyWise audited it for bias on 10 September 2026. That audit was built from invented candidates for one sales role rather than real hiring data.
Compare Ribbon, sold out of Toronto, Canada. Its paperwork names a US company, LiveKit, Inc., that runs its interviews.
| Product | What the candidate is told, and whether they can ask for a person | Can it reject a candidate with no recruiter? | Published bias audit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tengai | Told the avatar only runs the conversation. A candidate with a disability that makes the interview hard can contact the person who invited them. That is the only documented route to a person. | Tengai’s own pages describe this two ways. Most say the recruiter always decides. One page says its framework can screen and recommend candidates on its own. | None published. |
| Maki Mochi | Told before the call, and must agree to it. A human alternative exists only where local law asks for one. | Yes, through a setting. Recruiters can turn on filters, such as a missing work permit, that reject a candidate automatically. Maki’s own product page says no candidate is ever auto-rejected. | Yes. Holistic AI, dated March 2026. |
| Metaview Screening | Told plainly they are speaking to AI. A decline link exists, but it starts switched off. | Only for a missed deadline. One setting, off by default, rejects a candidate who misses the deadline. Otherwise a person clicks to move a candidate forward or reject them. | Yes. Warden AI, monthly. Latest audit dated 17 Aug 2026. |
| Spotted Zebra | No written notice for this product. Its general privacy policy promises to tell candidates, and says to email for anything else. | No. A recruiter decides. | Yes. VerifyWise, dated 10 Sep 2026, built from invented candidates for one sales role. |
| Employment Hero | The AI names itself at the start. | No. Its own terms call the interview high-risk AI and rule out automatic rejection. | No audit of the interview. Its only published testing covers a different feature, and is self-reported. |
Tengai deletes a recording after 36 months, or sooner if a candidate objects. Metaview keeps one for the recruitment process plus up to 24 months. Spotted Zebra’s privacy policy typically keeps a candidate’s data for up to seven years after the assessment. Get a time limit for the recording from Maki and Employment Hero.
Prices here are the same as in the US
Ribbon, based in Toronto, Canada, lists $499 a month, billed yearly, for a hundred interviews a month. CodeSignal lists $79 a month, billed yearly. Employment Hero lists A$199 a month for fifty interviews. That is in Australian dollars, the currency of its own pricing page. Go over Ribbon's first hundred interviews and it charges $4.00 an interview more. None of these rates change for a European or UK contract. None of the five publishes a separate European or UK rate.
Tengai and Spotted Zebra publish no price. What you pay depends on your hiring numbers and a call with a salesperson. Maki bills per candidate interaction, with each of its agents billed separately. Maki’s contract offers smaller plans than its website leads with. Metaview gives 25 free interviews, then sells packs. The packs expire rather than carry over. Buy them against a hiring plan for each country, not one guess for the whole region.
Three dated rules decide what you and the seller each owe
Three dated rules apply once you hire in Europe or the UK. Where each recording is kept is the fourth thing to check.
Reading a candidate’s feelings is already banned
Reading a candidate's feelings at work has been banned in the EU since 2 February 2025. The law makes an exception only for medical or safety reasons. The ban applies to you and to the seller. Employment Hero calls its video summary "sentiment analysis."
The EU's high-risk duties start 2 December 2027
From 2 December 2027, a system built to judge candidates counts as high-risk AI under EU law. The seller carries the maker’s duties. You carry the user’s duties. These include human oversight, telling candidates and keeping logs. Get each of the five to write into the contract what changes on that date.
The UK's rules on an automated decision have applied since 5 February 2026
A new UK law has applied since that date. It is section 80 of the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025. It covers a decision about a candidate made with no person involved. Maki's filters and one Tengai page describe decisions like this.
Only Tengai names where recordings are kept, in Sweden
Maki’s privacy policy allows a recording to leave the European Union. Spotted Zebra’s privacy policy says to email and ask. Get a named country from Metaview, Spotted Zebra and Employment Hero before you sign.
A bias audit tests whether a tool scores different groups of candidates differently. Maki, Metaview Screening and Spotted Zebra each publish one. All three were built to satisfy New York City's rule, not the EU's or the UK's. In New York City, the audit and notice duty falls on the employer, not the vendor.
What should you ask before you sign?
Take this list onto your first sales call.
- Maki: Which objective filters can exclude a candidate for us, and are any switched on by default? Good answer: A named list of filters, none on by default unless we choose them.
- Maki: Your privacy policy allows a supplier outside the European Union. Which safeguard covers that for our account? Good answer: A named safeguard, in writing.
- Tengai: One of your own pages says your framework can screen candidates on its own. Does a person always decide for our account? Good answer: Yes, always, confirmed in writing.
- Tengai: You publish no outside bias audit. Will you commission one before the EU's high-risk duties start on 2 December 2027? Good answer: Yes, with a date written into the contract.
- Metaview Screening: Your rating comes from the transcript alone. What does the camera actually check? Good answer: Written confirmation that nothing from the camera feeds the score.
- Spotted Zebra: Your bias audit used invented candidates for one sales role. Will you audit the roles we actually hire for? Good answer: Yes, before we sign.
- Employment Hero: Your video summary uses what you call sentiment analysis. What exactly does it read? Good answer: A named list of signals, in writing.
- Employment Hero: Can you confirm in writing that a person decides every rejection? Good answer: Yes, in the order form.
Tengai for the Nordics, Maki for the rest of Europe
Tengai keeps the interview in Sweden. It speaks Swedish or English, and translates every question into Norwegian and Danish.
Maki runs several European languages, with more on request. Get its answer on where your data is kept written into the contract.
Adding its interview tool is the simplest route.
Adding Metaview Screening keeps the audit trail in one place. Confirm which company, Metaview Global or its Delaware owner, is actually on your contract.
If you are also sizing this by headcount, our mid-market guide and enterprise guide cover the rest of this shortlist. The comparison page puts all sixteen tools side by side.
