Spotted Zebra (Spot)

Spot is Spotted Zebra's AI interviewer. It runs on Spotted Zebra's older skills platform. It holds a live conversation with each candidate and scores them against a skills profile for the role. A person on your team decides who moves forward. Spotted Zebra published a bias audit dated 10 September 2026. That audit tested invented candidates, not real ones. Spotted Zebra names no price for Spot.

In one line

Spot is a new AI interviewer on Spotted Zebra's established skills platform. It scores each candidate from the interview transcript. A person on your team makes every final call.

Buy it if

You already run Spotted Zebra's Role Skills Profiles or its Assessment tool. You want a bias audit and security certificates already in place. You accept being an early customer of this interviewer.

Do not buy it if

You need a published price before you talk to sales. You need proof from real candidates, not invented ones. Spotted Zebra's bias audit tested 5,000 invented candidates for one role, not real hires.

A person decides every hire, but few real candidates have used Spot

Every Spot interview starts from a Role Skills Profile, a list of the skills a role needs. Spotted Zebra's Assessment tool uses the same document. You can write that profile yourself, or let Spotted Zebra's AI suggest one. Spot then builds its questions and a six-skill scoring guide from it.

Once it starts, Spot holds a live conversation. A candidate can take it on any device, at any hour. Nobody has to book a slot. Spot does not read from a fixed script. It asks follow-up questions based on what the candidate says. It asks for clarification when it needs to, and repeats a question if asked. It also helps a candidate who loses their train of thought. Its questions come from a framework of more than 32,000 skills. Spotted Zebra says that framework draws on almost a million assessments it has run. Almost none of that history comes from this interviewer.

What comes back is a transcript, a summary and a score from 1 to 5 on each of six skills. Spot turns those six scores into one percentage with a fixed sum. Add them together, subtract six, divide by twenty-four, then multiply by a hundred. Spotted Zebra says there is no hidden score behind that number.

Spot does not select or reject anyone by itself. "Spot surfaces evidence. Humans make decisions," Spotted Zebra says about this product. It told its outside auditor the same thing. A person applies whatever cutoff you set.

Candidate applications reach Spot through Kombo, an outside company that links software to hiring systems. Spot's results reach the recruiter the same way. Spotted Zebra's AI Interview page says the Kombo link sends application status, candidate data and assessment results both ways.

Spotted Zebra says only that candidates take Spot "on any device, any time." Get the channel, and whether Spot reads tone of voice or expression, in writing. Reading a candidate’s emotions at work has been banned in the EU since 2 February 2025.

Spot launched in March 2026. By 11 September 2026, only 281 real candidates had shared their gender identity through it. Only 50 had shared their ethnicity. That was too few to test, so the bias audit skipped real candidates. The outside auditor built 5,000 invented candidate transcripts for one Account Executive role instead. The audit found that Spot "discriminates strongly on qualification." That means it tells stronger and weaker candidates apart, which a screen should do. It is a different thing from bias by sex or race.

Our guide to AI interview agents compares the proof each product can show.

A public bias audit and traceable scores work in your favor

An audit already exists, and its numbers are public

VerifyWise is the outside firm Spotted Zebra hired to check Spot for bias. It dated its audit 10 September 2026. The audit stays valid until 10 September 2027. Half the tested candidates scored above 83.3%. The audit compares each group’s results with the best-scoring group’s, as a ratio. The lowest ratio was 0.891. Audits like this treat anything under 0.80 as a warning sign. A scoring fault meant 80 tested candidates got no score at all. That fault spread evenly across every protected group.

Every score points back to a moment in the interview

Every evaluation links back to what a candidate said, and to the skill it maps to. The ranked shortlist carries those links. Spotted Zebra also keeps a full record of every conversation and decision.

It holds ISO certificates for security and for AI management

Spotted Zebra earned an information security certificate called ISO 27001 in December 2023. That is more than two years before Spot existed. Spotted Zebra also says AI Interview Agent is ISO 42001 certified, the standard for managing AI systems responsibly. It calls itself "fully EU AI Act compliant, ahead of the August 2026 deadline for high-risk AI hiring tools." In July 2026 the EU amended that Act. The amendment moved the start date for high-risk duties on hiring tools to 2 December 2027.

The founders still own it, and four product details are unclear

Spotted Zebra Solutions Ltd is still owned by the two people who founded it. The UK's public company register lists Ian Monk and Nick Shaw as its only significant shareholders. Each holds more than a quarter of the company, but not more than half. No acquirer or parent company is on record. Spotted Zebra has raised £7.7m in total, all in one funding round announced in October 2023. No lawsuit, regulator complaint or layoff against the company has been reported.

The proof behind Spot is thinner than the proof behind Spotted Zebra

Every customer result on the site belongs to a different part of the platform, not to Spot. Virgin Media O2's 66% cut in retail time to hire is credited to Skills Assessment. A quote from AWE, "adverse impact non-existent, winning industry awards," sits on the product overview page. It is about Spotted Zebra as a whole, not this interviewer by name.

The 20+ languages figure belongs to another product

The "20+ global assessment languages" figure on its site belongs to the Assessment tool, not to Spot. Get the on-screen avatar, the typical length and Spot's own languages in writing before a demo.

Its cheat detection is named but not described

The AI Interview page states "cheat detection and integrity monitoring built in." It could check who the candidate is. It could look for a stand-in or an answer written by AI.

The only candidate route is a general test mailbox

Spotted Zebra publishes one route for a candidate who needs an adjustment, or who wants a person instead of Spot. That route is a general assessment mailbox in its Candidate FAQ. It was written for its tests, not named for this interview. Its privacy policy gives candidates other rights. One lets them ask to be told when software plays a part in a decision about them. Another lets them ask a person to look at that decision again. A third lets them ask what logic and data were used, where that applies. Get written confirmation that these rights cover Spot interviews.

It suits current Spotted Zebra customers hiring at volume

Current Spotted Zebra customers add it in the same account

If your recruiters already build Role Skills Profiles, Spot arrives inside the same account. The same is true if they run Spotted Zebra's Assessment tool. It is not a new supplier to add. Spotted Zebra says it is built to "slot seamlessly into your existing tools and workflows."

It is built for roles with thousands of applicants

Spotted Zebra's hiring pages use the line "5,000 applications. One role. No time." It claims Spot can screen thousands of candidates in hours, not weeks.

It suits a team that must explain a decision later

The shortlist comes ranked, with the transcript moment behind every score. A team can explain a hiring decision to a candidate, a manager or a regulator.

No price is published, and candidate data is kept up to seven years

Spotted Zebra has no pricing page. Get a price in writing. Get the charging unit too, such as per candidate, per role or per seat.

Spotted Zebra states no minimum company size for buying Spot. Every named company is a large enterprise. They are Lidl, Virgin Media O2, AWE, Merlin Entertainments and Paramount. Virgin Media O2 alone runs more than 300 UK stores.

The only contract on its site is its terms of business for Zoom users. That document was written for a different Spotted Zebra product.

Spotted Zebra's privacy policy says it typically keeps a candidate's test data for up to seven years after the assessment. It deletes the data within twenty business days if the candidate or the client asks. It keeps a client's own data for ninety days after the account closes. CVs follow the hiring company's own rules. They are deleted within twelve months at most. Candidates can also ask for their data to be erased, or moved to another company in some cases.

You could also build a screen, an interview and a debrief on your own tracking system. We have mapped what that looks like. See it as an agent

What should you ask Spotted Zebra before you sign?

  1. Will our candidates take Spot as a phone call, a browser voice call, a video call, or typed chat? Will they see an on-screen avatar too? Good answer: One clear channel and format, named in writing.
  2. How many real candidates has Spot interviewed since it launched, and across how many customers? Can we speak to one directly? Good answer: A number, a customer list, and a live reference call.
  3. Do we get to see and approve the exact questions Spot will ask, before a single candidate does? Good answer: Yes, with a review step built into onboarding.
  4. What does "cheat detection and integrity monitoring" check, and what happens once it flags a candidate? Good answer: A named list of checks, and a next step decided by a person on our team.
  5. Does Spot read anything beyond the words a candidate says, such as their tone of voice or expression? Good answer: No. It scores only what the candidate says.
  6. Which document would we sign, and does it carry the same terms as your Zoom-users page? Good answer: A named contract, with its own terms shown before we sign.
  7. If we leave, what data comes out, and within how many days? Good answer: Every record, within twenty business days.
  8. Your bias audit tested invented candidates for one role. Will you run it again on our real hiring data, and share the results? Good answer: Yes, with a date for the re-run and a commitment to share results.

Alternatives to Spotted Zebra, including buying nothing

The closest alternatives to Spotted Zebra are Tengai, Maki's Mochi, HireVue and Eightfold. Buying nothing yet is a fifth option.

Tengai also starts from assessment science, not from a hiring system. If that is what drew you to Spotted Zebra, look at Tengai too.

Maki's Mochi is built differently. Its filters can reject a candidate without a person. Spot leaves every decision to a person on your team. If you want a tool that can act on its own, compare Mochi first.

HireVue puts a similar interviewer inside a larger, longer-established platform. Look at Eightfold if its size and its bias audit matter more to you than skills profiles.

If you run no other part of Spotted Zebra's platform, buy nothing yet. Spot is sold as one of three things on the same account. The company's own launch post asks a buyer to combine it with the other two. Buying the interviewer alone means starting with no Role Skills Profile and no Assessment data. In New York City, the bias-audit and candidate-notice duties fall on the employer, not the vendor. Our guide to the rest of this market goes into more depth.

Sources and method Everything said about Spotted Zebra here comes from its own website, its published bias audit filing, its privacy policy and its terms for Zoom users, and from the UK's own company register. What Spotted Zebra publishes about its own product is taken as its description of that product. Every source was read on 19 September 2026, and quotations are verbatim. Its product overview page describes two things, and its own site navigation lists three. We use three here, because the navigation is current on every page and names AI Interview directly. Its bias audit filing gives the tool's distribution date as February 2026. Its own launch post dates AI Interview Agent to 5 March 2026, a month later. We use the launch post's date, not the February one. G2's and Capterra's pricing pages for Spotted Zebra were both blocked to automated reading, so neither is used here.
