Employment Hero (Recruitment Agent)
Employment Hero’s AI interviewer costs A$199 a month for 50 interviews. It runs in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Canada. Buy it alone, with its own candidate tracker. Or add it to an Employment Hero HR plan, if you run one. A recruiter decides every reject, by contract. No outside audit has tested the interview for bias.
An AI interviewer built into Employment Hero’s HR and payroll platform, or sold with its own tracker. A recruiter decides every reject, by contract.
You run Employment Hero for HR and payroll on HR Engage or above. Your hiring sits in Australia, New Zealand, the UK or Canada.
Your candidates sit in Workday or Greenhouse, which this interview does not connect to. You need to check a candidate’s identity or catch a stand-in. You need an outside bias audit of the interview. Published testing covers only the screening step that runs before it.
The interview alone costs A$199 a month for 50 interviews, billed yearly. Add it to an HR plan instead, and the price sits inside that plan.
An AI avatar runs a video interview from your job description
Employment Hero sells this interview two ways, alone or inside an HR plan. If you run its platform for payroll and HR, the HR-plan version is the one you would use. Either way, the interview reads candidates from Employment Hero’s own tracker and puts the result back there. Get any link to another tracker or HR system confirmed in writing before you sign.
An invited candidate gets an email that names the role and the deadline. The candidate then has seven days to start. Once the interview begins, a live avatar greets the candidate by name and holds a two-way conversation. The avatar asks four to six questions and follows up when an answer runs short. A session can run fifteen to thirty minutes because of that.
Your team supplies the job description. Employment Hero drafts the interview questions from it. Each question carries a scoring guide that sets out a good answer and a poor one. Nothing reaches a candidate until someone on your team checks it first. You can edit or replace any question or guide before the invitation goes out.
For each candidate, you get the recording, a transcript and a score for every question. Each score carries the AI’s own reasoning. You also get a written summary of their strengths and the points still worth probing. Employment Hero’s AI Services Statement says the interview "reviews written, audio, and video responses to produce an evaluation". Every summary also carries what Employment Hero calls "sentiment analysis", next to its notes on performance.
Employment Hero’s AI terms also ban reading emotion, in hiring and at work. A customer must not use its AI to "infer the emotional or psychological states of individuals". That covers reading a face, a voice or any similar signal. Reading emotion from a face or a voice at work has been banned in the EU since 2 February 2025.
It includes a tracker and tells every candidate they face an AI
Buying it alone still gives you a full candidate tracker
Choose the version Employment Hero sells alone, and a full candidate tracker comes with it. That includes a job posting, an applicant list and candidate scoring. You need no HR or payroll plan first. If you run no tracker today, this is one product and one contract instead of two.
A candidate can ask a person to look again at an AI assessment
The AI Services Statement gives candidates this right. It sits beside the contract rule that a person reviews every reject.
Every candidate is told plainly that they are talking to an AI
The invitation email says the candidate will speak with an AI, not a person. Employment Hero’s AI terms go further. They promise to tell every candidate, at the start of the call, that they are talking to an AI system.
The same questions and scoring guide meet every candidate for a role
The Recruitment Agent scores facts from a candidate’s work history, such as their skills, past duties and certificates. It leaves out protected traits from that score. The same process runs for every candidate going for a role. No candidate gets easier questions or a softer scoring guide.
No outside bias audit, no uptime promise and no identity check
Employment Hero has traded since 2014. Ben Thompson and Dave Tong founded it. It is privately held, and venture investors back it. Its October 2023 announcement put its latest round at A$263 million, led by TCV. It says it has raised over $650 million in total, at a valuation just under $2 billion. No lawsuit naming Employment Hero appears in the US federal court record. No other company has announced buying it.
The contract promises no uptime for the AI features
Employment Hero’s own terms say AI Services get none of the "service level commitments" the rest of the platform gets. The same terms warn that the AI’s output "may contain inaccuracies". They also say you "must not rely on Output as the sole basis for any consequential decision". Put a support window and a remedy for downtime into your own order form.
Nothing checks who is actually answering
Employment Hero’s pages describe no identity check against a document. They describe no check for a stand-in, a deepfake, or answers read from another AI. If these are a problem in your hiring, get in writing what the product checks before you sign.
Bias testing published so far skips the interview itself
Employment Hero reports bias testing that found no clear bias against any group in the cases it tested. That testing covers only the Shortlisting Agent, the feature that reads CVs and screening answers before an interview happens. It does not cover the video interview itself. Employment Hero ran this testing itself. If a bias audit of this interview matters to you, request one directly from Employment Hero.
A candidate has no stated way to ask for a human interviewer
Employment Hero also gives no stated way to ask for a disability adjustment. A candidate’s only route is writing to your hiring team directly. That means you build the policy yourself.
It suits Employment Hero users in four countries
If you run Employment Hero on HR Engage or above, this is one setting away
On HR Engage or above, turning on the Recruitment Agent takes one setting. You get no new supplier, no new login and no new contract to negotiate. The entry HR Essentials plan leaves it out.
It runs in four countries, and nowhere else yet
Employment Hero’s own regional pages show the interview live in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Canada. Its Singapore and Malaysia pages offer only a standard applicant tracker. Its region picker has no United States site. If you hire outside those four countries, plan on a second product for that part of your hiring.
Two larger customers cut hiring time and screening hours
Thermosash Commercial Group is a New Zealand construction and manufacturing company with more than 550 employees. It cut its hiring timeline from six to eight weeks down to about 20 days. Its AI screening also saves roughly 50 hours in every round of 100 candidates. All About Caring is a New South Wales disability-support provider with 240 or more employees. It now gets 200 to 500 applications per listing pre-screened, saving about 15 minutes a candidate.
Two companies under 150 staff cut screening time
Pivotel Satellite is a Queensland telecommunications company with 120 employees. It cut its screening time per candidate by 67%. It now reviews a 12-minute AI interview instead of a 30-minute call. Alchemy Saunas is a Perth wellness business with 80 employees. It cut screening from two to three hours per applicant down to 10 to 15 minutes.
The standalone price is public, and HR Engage includes it
Employment Hero publishes its prices, which is rare in this market. Bought alone, the entry price is A$199 a month excluding GST, the Australian sales tax, for 50 interviews a month. Pay monthly instead, and the same 50 interviews cost A$249. A plan for 100 interviews costs A$359, and one for 200 costs A$639. A plan for 300 interviews also exists. None of these plans needs an HR or payroll plan alongside it.
Employment Hero includes the Recruitment Agent in its HR Engage plan, at A$14. It is also in the Elite and Employment Unlimited plans. Both are quoted only after a call to its sales team. The entry HR Essentials plan, at A$10, leaves the Recruitment Agent out. Get the billing unit for these prices in writing. Every bundled plan needs at least 10 users. You pay for your agreed user count or your active users, whichever is higher.
What happens once your interviews run out depends on which version you bought. The standalone plan bills every extra interview automatically, with no hard cap. The bundled plan instead fixes a monthly allowance by tier. That runs from 15 interviews a month up to 70 on Unlimited. Going past it means requesting a bigger number from your account manager. Interviews run purely as a test do not count against either limit.
When you leave, Employment Hero’s data agreement requires it to destroy or return your candidates’ personal data. That happens once you request it in writing. While your account stays open, data stays until you delete it or set a rule. An admin can turn on automatic anonymising of a candidate’s profile. You choose after how many months it happens. That strips the name, contact details and documents from a record. You do not need to request it from Employment Hero.
You could also build a screen, an interview and a debrief on your own tracking system. We have mapped what that looks like. See it as an agent
What should you ask before you sign?
- The interview summary calls one measure sentiment analysis. Does it actually read words, a voice or a face? Good answer: A plain description with no face or voice reading. Its own AI terms already ban that at work.
- Can you cap the automatic billing on the standalone plan once our included interviews run out for the month? Good answer: A monthly cap, written into the contract.
- For which of our roles could the Shortlisting Agent move a candidate to interview with nobody deciding first? Who can turn that off? Good answer: A named list of roles, and one admin who controls the setting.
- Your terms already stop the interview from rejecting a candidate without a person reviewing it. Can that rule ever be loosened for us? Good answer: No. A person’s review stays in every contract you sign.
- What happens for a candidate who cannot use a camera, or who asks for a person instead of the avatar? Good answer: A named route on our side, and someone who owns answering it.
- Has anyone outside your own team tested the video interview itself for bias? Will you share that test against our roles? Good answer: A named outside auditor, a date, and a report we can read.
- If we leave, how long do we have to pull out recordings, transcripts and scores, and in what form? Good answer: A written number of days, and a file format that opens elsewhere.
- We hire outside Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Canada. When is the interview coming to those markets? Good answer: A named date, or a clear no with a suggested alternative for now.
Ribbon has a fixed overage rate, and buying nothing is also an option
Weigh four other interviewers against this one. They are Ribbon, HeyMilo, Humanly and Maki Mochi. None of them needs Employment Hero’s own HR platform first. Buying nothing, and keeping the screening call with your recruiters, is a fifth option.
Employment Hero is one of three products in this market with a public price. CodeSignal is another, though its price buys an assessment product with the interview inside it. Ribbon is the closer comparison. Its plans start at $499 a month for 100 interviews a month. Every interview past that costs $4.00 an interview. Ribbon’s overage rate is fixed and published. Employment Hero’s is not. Its bundled plan needs a negotiated increase instead.
HeyMilo and Humanly are both built to sit inside a tracking system already in place. Neither brings a tracker of its own. Both can also move a candidate on a score alone, once someone switches that on. Employment Hero’s contract will not let you reject a candidate that way. Pick Employment Hero if a person must decide every reject. Pick HeyMilo or Humanly if you want to stay inside a tracker you already run.
Maki Mochi lets recruiters set filters that reject a candidate automatically. Maki’s own product page says no candidate is ever auto-rejected, so the filters are a setting you choose. Maki built its compliance work for the EU AI Act specifically. Employment Hero’s own regions stop at Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Canada. If hiring runs inside the EU, Maki Mochi is the one built with that law in mind.
Buying nothing is a real option if your hiring volume does not justify a new tracker just for the interview. At twenty screens a month, most of the 50 interviews in Employment Hero’s smallest plan would go unused. Pivotel and Alchemy Saunas both got a real result from this product, at 120 and 80 employees. Both are far smaller than what most of this market expects to sell to.
