HackerRank Chakra

Chakra is HackerRank’s AI interviewer. It talks to a candidate by voice and sets a hands-on task in the same sitting. It scores each candidate and your team decides who moves on. HackerRank prices it per interview. The screen sharing, the outside AI providers and the audits are the points to settle before you buy.

Chakra interviews and tests candidates in one sitting, and a person decides

In one line

Chakra holds a voice interview and watches the candidate do a task. It gives your team a scored report with the recording. Your team makes the decision.

Buy it if

You want one interview in place of a recruiter call, a take-home test and an engineer interview. You use Workday, Greenhouse or Ashby. You want a recording behind every score.

Do not buy it if

You cannot ask candidates to share their screen. You need a firmer uptime promise than a promise to try.

Price

Chakra is priced per interview attempt, with volume discounts. Annual fees are due a year ahead.

What a candidate does in a Chakra interview, and what you get back

Chakra is an AI interviewer from HackerRank. It runs a live voice interview and a hands-on task in one sitting. It went on general sale on 5 October 2026, after about six months in testing.

Your team starts from a job description. Chakra writes the plan and the questions. Your team can change either.

Candidates get a link by email or from your careers page, and interview when it suits them. A spreadsheet upload invites many at once.

Chakra asks follow-up questions as it speaks with the candidate. It also opens a live workspace that looks like a coding window and watches the candidate work. It evaluates judgement, critical thinking and AI fluency. AI fluency means how well the candidate works with an AI assistant.

The report gives an overall score out of 5 and a score for each section. You can filter candidates by status and by signs of cheating.

Your team makes the hiring decision. Chakra does not make hiring decisions. The AI Feature Terms forbid automated decisions that significantly affect people unless a person reviews them. They also provide the AI features as they are, with no promise of accuracy. Decide who reads each report and what a low score leads to.

Chakra flags tab switches and full-screen exits. It pauses the interview when a candidate leaves the webcam view or connects a second monitor.

Read Chakra’s page in our AI interview agents guide to see how it fares as an interviewer.

Every candidate gets the same interview, and every score has evidence

Every candidate gets the same interview and the same scoring

Everyone assigned to one interview gets the same plan and is judged on the same criteria. Chakra scores each criterion on its own. A strong answer in one area does not cover for a weak answer in another. Chakra does not tell candidates whether an answer is right. It does not show them a score during the interview.

Each score points to the moment behind it

Every score traces back to a specific moment in the transcript. In the report, you select a summary bullet. You then see the criteria, the transcript references with timestamps and the highlighted answers.

The report comes with the full recording

Each report holds a video of the whole interview with a matching transcript. It plays back the candidate’s screen and webcam. A hiring manager can check any score against what the candidate said and did.

Chakra carries HackerRank’s security controls

Chakra inherits the platform’s controls. They include SOC 2 compliance, which is an outside check of security. They also include encryption and single sign-on with multi-factor login.

Companies including Snowflake and Capgemini tried it in testing

TechCrunch reported that HackerRank ran more than 500,000 interviews in testing. Snowflake and Capgemini were among the companies that tried it. Candidates rate the Chakra interview 4.8 out of 5 on average. HackerRank’s CEO told TechCrunch that suspicious-activity flags were 70% to 80% lower in Chakra interviews than in comparable HackerRank assessments. The CEO said the figure varies by country and seniority.

Who gets the most from Chakra

You hire engineers and also want to interview other roles

Chakra interviews for technical and non-technical roles. One product can serve engineering and the rest of the business.

You run Workday, Greenhouse or Ashby

Your system sends the invitation and holds the finished report on the candidate’s profile. Recruiters stay in the tool they already use. Workday also shows the score. Chakra also links to Eightfold, a talent platform, and HackerRank offers a way for your own systems to pull reports.

Screen sharing, outside providers and the bias audits

Candidates must share their screen and accept monitoring

Candidates must share their screen so Chakra can watch it. In the desktop app, they agree to a list of banned actions first. A candidate who does not consent to an AI feature the employer turned on may be unable to take part.

Candidates’ rights about the AI are claims against you, the employer

A candidate may have rights against the employer. They include an alternative process, human review, correction of wrong information and an explanation of how AI was used. Your team also controls whether candidates are asked for details such as gender. Decide before launch who answers these requests.

Outside providers in the US handle candidate data

AssemblyAI turns speech into text. LiveKit streams the speech. Google Gemini analyses images. OpenAI analyses screenshots. Anthropic analyses deleted code to find suspicious words. Postmark sends the invitation emails. All six are in the US. If you hire outside the US, check what that means for your candidates.

HackerRank may train its AI on anonymous data

HackerRank’s AI Addendum promises customer data does not train its AI features. Chakra promises candidate data never trains AI models. The AI Feature Terms still let HackerRank train its AI feature models on combined, anonymous AI content. Ask HackerRank to say in your contract which data each promise covers.

Bias audit summaries cover parts of the product, so ask about the interview scoring

HackerRank runs bias analyses with outside auditors under New York City’s bias audit law, Local Law 144. It has published summaries for plagiarism detection and for webcam image analysis, which Chakra uses. The outside auditor BABL AI carried out both audits. Ask whether any audit covers the interview scoring.

Chakra is priced per interview, and plans are paid a year ahead

Chakra is priced per interview attempt, with volume discounts. An attempt counts when a candidate begins a test or joins an interview session. Past your plan, HackerRank charges your payment method for each batch of 25 extra attempts.

On the enterprise plan, Chakra is part of an AI add-on package, for select customers only. Screen is HackerRank’s skills test product, with its own plans and yearly attempts.

Annual plans renew by themselves each year unless you cancel. The Master Subscription Agreement makes fees due a year ahead for each term. It also bars cancelling service orders except as it allows. The pricing terms let a customer cancel at any time. The cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing cycle. Ask which one applies to your plan.

The Service Level Agreement only promises that HackerRank will try to keep the system up. If uptime in a month falls below 90%, you may end the contract on 30 days’ written notice.

For most claims, each side’s liability is capped at what was paid or payable in the prior 12 months. For a breach of HackerRank’s privacy and security duties, the cap is three times that.

When the contract ends, you have 30 days to extract your data. HackerRank deletes or returns all personal data, whichever you choose. If you do not choose within 30 days, it deletes the data under its retention policy.

You could also find and screen people with agents built on your own systems. We have mapped what that looks like. The HR Agent Map

Eight questions to ask HackerRank before you sign

  1. What does one Chakra interview attempt cost at our volume, and does a Screen skills test attempt cost the same? Good answer: A written rate per attempt, with the volume tiers, on our order form.
  2. Is Chakra in our plan or an extra, and are we eligible to buy it? Good answer: A named plan, a written price and a yes on eligibility.
  3. Will you write into our contract that no customer or candidate data trains any AI, even combined and anonymous data? Good answer: Yes, one clause that covers both, for you and for your AI providers.
  4. Is there a bias audit of Chakra’s interview scoring, and can we publish it? Good answer: A full report from an outside auditor, with figures for each group, that we can publish.
  5. What does a candidate get if they refuse the screen sharing, the webcam or the AI? Good answer: A named alternative that does not count against the candidate.
  6. Can we set the uptime promise, the notice period and the liability cap in our own order form? Good answer: Written terms for all three, with money back when uptime is missed.
  7. How long do you keep our candidates’ recordings and transcripts, and can we set that in the order form? Good answer: A named time for each, written into the order form.
  8. What do we receive when the contract ends, and in which formats? Good answer: Recordings, transcripts and reports in named file formats, inside a written time window.

Alternatives to HackerRank

If Chakra does not fit, look at CodeSignal, HeyMilo and Humanly, or buy nothing.

CodeSignal runs AI interviews for engineering and for other roles. It publishes its prices. Build costs $79 a month billed yearly. It includes 60 candidate sessions a year, paid for up front, with AI interviewers for product, design and engineering. Grow costs $479 a month billed yearly. It includes 420 sessions and adds AI interviewers for sales and marketing. Pro is custom. A session is used when a candidate starts an assessment or an interview. Extra sessions cost $20 each. CodeSignal checks identity by matching a government photo ID to the person on camera. It runs live phone interviews in more than 20 languages.

HeyMilo screens and interviews applicants by voice, video, text message and forms in more than 20 languages. It gives each interview a trust score for the likelihood of cheating. Recruiters make the final call. Humanly is built for hourly, frontline and high-volume hiring. It screens over chat, text message, email and voice, and it also sells an applicant tracking system.

Buying nothing is a real choice. If you fill only a few of these roles a year, your own interviewers can run the first round. Chakra then adds cost and the work of telling candidates how it watches them.
