HackerRank Chakra
Chakra is HackerRank's AI interviewer, sold separately from HackerRank's coding-test plans. It splits the work between three AI parts. One plans the interview, one runs it and one scores it. Every score links to a moment in the transcript. HackerRank's two bias audits cover other checks, not Chakra's own scoring. Get a written answer on whether New York City's AI hiring law covers Chakra.
An AI interviewer sold as its own account, not as a feature in another HackerRank plan. A recruiter reads its scored report and decides.
You already use HackerRank for technical assessments, or want a score that shows its reasoning. And you can live with a price that only appears once you request it.
You need a bias audit that names Chakra's own scoring. You need to know now whether the interview is recorded on video. Or you need a written answer on where Chakra sits under New York City's AI hiring law.
Not published. HackerRank prices Chakra per interview attempt, with volume discounts as usage grows.
A plan from your job description, an AI interview, a scored report
A candidate opens Chakra's link whenever suits them, not at a set time. They allow their webcam and microphone, then hold a live voice interview. Chakra follows up on what the candidate says, and presses for more when an answer stays vague. Nobody has to schedule a call.
Three AI agents, each doing one job, build the interview and the report. The Interview Creator Agent turns your job description into a plan before a candidate sees it. That plan lists the sections, the sample questions, and what counts as a good answer to each one. You can reorder its sections, change the kind of question, and mark a requirement Must have. HackerRank says a Must have mark carries more weight in the score. You can also run the whole plan yourself first, to review it. Once the plan goes live, the Interviewer Agent holds the conversation and covers every section inside the time you set. Once the candidate finishes, the Reporter Agent reads the whole transcript against that plan, and scores it.
Each part of the plan gets a score tied to a moment in the transcript. The report also gives an overall recommendation and a written summary. It includes a recording of the interview too, with a matching transcript. HackerRank's own pages disagree on the recording's format. One support article calls it a video recording. A blog post about the same product calls it an audio recording.
A separate webcam check looks at the picture, not the words. It flags a missing face or an extra face, including one that appears partway through, and records each event. The interview pauses itself the moment a candidate leaves full screen or connects a second monitor. It also pauses when the candidate copies their screen to another display. Screenshot Analysis is a paid feature on top of Chakra. Turned on, it scans the candidate's screen for tools it does not recognise. HackerRank’s Desktop App Mode, when switched on, closes other programs a candidate opens. That includes tools built to hide AI help, such as Cluely and Ultracode. None of this matches a candidate's face against a government document. That check belongs to a different HackerRank product.
Chakra connects to Workday, Ashby and Greenhouse. Moving a candidate to the right stage sends the interview invitation. Once the interview ends, the score and a link to the report land on the candidate's record in that system. A HackerRank blog post also names Eightfold as a connection. Get HackerRank to confirm what the Eightfold link does.
Our AI interview agents guide compares it with the rest of the market.
Scores link to the transcript, and your team makes every decision
Every score links to a moment in the transcript
A note sits behind each score. It links to the exact moment in the conversation that earned it. HackerRank scores every candidate against the same plan, so one interview cannot change the rules for the next person. A reviewer can trace the reasoning and compare two candidates fairly.
You see the interview plan before any candidate does
The questions and what counts as a good answer come from your own job description. You can change the plan and run the interview yourself before anything goes live. That gives you more chance to catch a bad question than a fixed test does.
Results land in Workday, Ashby or Greenhouse
If your recruiters already work in one of these, Chakra fits in without a new step. Nobody has to copy the result across by hand.
Candidates are told, and can ask for a person
Before the interview starts, HackerRank’s own notice has the candidate agree that AI may be used. The same notice states the candidate’s rights. They can request a different process. They can request a disability accommodation. They can request a person to review an AI-assisted decision. They can correct wrong information used in it. And they can get an explanation if the outcome goes against them. You, not HackerRank, must answer each request.
No bias audit covers Chakra’s scoring, and its legal status is unclear
HackerRank began in July 2009. Its two founders left jobs at Amazon and IBM to build what was then called InterviewStreet. HackerRank's own history page lists four funding rounds since then. The latest was $60 million in March 2022, led by Susquehanna Growth Equity. No court case names HackerRank as a party.
Chakra is a separate account, not part of another HackerRank plan
Chakra sits apart from HackerRank’s Starter, Pro and Enterprise plans. Those plans cover Screen and Interview, its coding-test and live-interview products. HackerRank’s support team has to turn Chakra on before your first candidate can take it. Treat it, and the call that gets you a quote, as a new purchase, not an upgrade.
Get a written answer on whether New York City’s law covers Chakra
HackerRank publishes an FAQ on which of its services count as an automated employment decision tool. That is the term in New York City’s Local Law 144, the city’s rule on AI hiring tools. The FAQ says Screen and Interview do not count, because neither uses AI. It names HackerRank’s plagiarism check and its webcam check as the two that do. It lists those four and not Chakra, which runs three AI agents to interview and score a candidate. Get an answer from HackerRank directly, rather than guess.
Its two bias audits were written for other checks, not for Chakra’s own scoring
HackerRank publishes two bias audits, both dated the same day in 2024, both passed. One covers a plagiarism check that Chakra does not use. The other covers the webcam check for a missing or extra face. Chakra does use that check, but the audit never names it. Neither audit reaches what the Interviewer and Reporter agents score a candidate on. That scoring is the part of Chakra that ranks people.
The recording may hold video of the candidate’s face
Whether the recording holds a candidate’s face, or only their voice, changes what you hold about them. It also changes what notice you owe them. Settle the format, and how long HackerRank keeps it, in writing before the first interview runs.
It fits teams that already trust HackerRank's name
If your team already uses HackerRank, Chakra stays in one place
Adding Chakra keeps the interview with a company you already deal with. It is still a separate account, and a separate conversation on price.
It is built to interview more than engineers
Chakra’s own homepage lists roles from sales and support to product and engineering. HackerRank calls it a middle ground. It sits between a general interviewer for any role and a specialist technical one.
Priced per interview, with a 99.50% uptime target and a 30-day exit
HackerRank publishes no rate for Chakra. Its own blog gives only the shape of the price.
Confirm what a quote includes. Screenshot Analysis, the check for unrecognised tools on a candidate's screen, needs HackerRank's paid AI Add-on. The webcam check for a missing or extra face carries no such extra charge. HackerRank publishes no minimum company size, seat count or interview volume for Chakra.
HackerRank's Master Subscription Agreement governs Chakra, along with everything else it sells. Fees are due once a year, paid upfront. Once you place an order, you cannot cancel it, except as the agreement allows. A separate Service Level Agreement covers uptime. HackerRank aims for 99.50% uptime each month. It takes the service down for planned maintenance every Friday, between 10pm and 11pm Pacific time. Miss that 99.50% figure, and you get a refund on a sliding scale. That starts at 5% back for falling just under it, and rises to a full refund under 90% uptime. If uptime falls under 90% in a month, you can leave on 30 days' notice. Check these terms, and any remedy beyond the refund, before you sign.
You get a 30-day window to pull your own data out once the contract ends, before HackerRank cuts off access. After that, HackerRank deletes or returns your candidates' personal data, whichever you choose. If you never say which, its policy defaults to deletion. Data drawn from facial detection is deleted within three years of a candidate's last contact with HackerRank, at the latest. It can go sooner once its purpose is done. Inside Chakra, a recruiter can export every candidate's scores and written summaries for one interview setup as a single file. The recording and the transcript do not come out that way. Re-inviting a candidate who already tried the interview deletes their earlier report. Only HackerRank's support team can bring it back. A bulk deletion request across many candidates is handled separately. HackerRank anonymises the data within 14 days of receiving your request and your candidate list.
You could also build a screen, an interview and a debrief on your own tracking system. We have mapped what that looks like. See it as an agent
What should you ask on the call?
- Is the interview recorded as video, or only as audio? Your own pages disagree. Good answer: A plain answer in writing, plus how long you keep the file.
- Where does Chakra sit under New York City’s Local Law 144, the city’s rule on AI hiring tools? Your FAQ names Screen, Interview and your plagiarism and image checks, but not Chakra. Good answer: A direct answer in writing, not a note to ask our own lawyer.
- Do either of your published bias audits, or a new one, cover the Interviewer and Reporter agents? Those two score a candidate. Your webcam check does not. Good answer: A dated audit that names those two agents.
- What does an active Chakra account cost us, beyond any plan we already hold? Does Screenshot Analysis add to that? Good answer: A written figure for both, before the demo ends.
- Do you have a customer result for Chakra itself, not for Screen or HackerRank generally? Good answer: A named customer and a number, or a plain no.
- Your blog names Eightfold as a connection too. Does Chakra send results to Eightfold the way it does to Workday, Ashby and Greenhouse? Or does that link only send the invitation? Good answer: A clear yes or no, not an answer that depends.
- If uptime falls under your 99.50% commitment, is the refund our only remedy? Does your Friday-night downtime sit inside a window we can move? Good answer: A remedy beyond the refund, and a window we control.
- What comes out when we leave? Can we export the recordings and transcripts, not only the scores? Good answer: Yes, in writing, or a plain no before we sign.
CodeSignal, Glider AI, Talview Ivy or HireVue, or buy nothing
The closest alternatives to HackerRank Chakra are CodeSignal, Glider AI, Talview Ivy and HireVue. A fifth option is to buy nothing at all.
CodeSignal publishes its price, and Chakra does not. CodeSignal’s own pricing page states a rate from $79 a month, billed annually. It lets you work out a budget before you speak to anyone.
Glider AI and Talview Ivy both publish no price either. A sales conversation starts every comparison in this group, Chakra included. Glider AI writes its own interview questions and runs the whole interview before a person steps in. Its ownership is unsettled too, after an announced sale. Talview usually wants about 150 to 200 interviews committed before it starts. Talview also watches the candidate’s camera and screen, like Chakra’s own checks.
If you want the interview inside a platform your team already uses, HireVue is built that way. It sells alongside Workday, SAP SuccessFactors or Oracle, rather than as a separate account the way Chakra is. The cost is losing the three-agent design Chakra builds its report around, and the evidence that comes with it.
Buy nothing yet if your hiring volume does not justify a new account and a new conversation on price. Also wait if you need a plain answer on where Chakra sits under New York City's law. Get that answer before you send real candidates through it. The bias-audit and notice duty in New York City falls on the employer, not the vendor.
