Betterworks costs $8 or $9 per user per month and its AI starts switched off

Betterworks runs review rounds, goals, one-to-one meetings and rating reviews. It publishes two prices per user per month. Its AI features stay off until your admin turns them on.

Betterworks in short

In one line

Betterworks runs your review rounds, goals and one-to-one meetings from one product. Rating review meetings come with the $9 package. You choose which AI features to switch on.

Buy it if

You want reviews, goals and rating reviews from one vendor and accept the $9 package. You want to limit AI to chosen groups or regions. You can accept a contract that renews unless you give 90 days’ notice.

Do not buy it if

You need AI at no extra cost for your whole term. Under its standard AI terms, Betterworks may start charging for AI at any time on prior notice. You need AI insights from Microsoft Teams call transcripts. Native Teams support is marked coming soon. You need live support outside 5am to 8pm Eastern Time on weekdays. Those are the hours in the standard service level agreement.

Price

$8 per user per month for Performance. $9 for Performance + Talent Intelligence, which adds rating review meetings. Enterprise has a custom price. Implementation costs extra, once. Signature Support costs extra.

Review rounds, goals, one-to-one meetings and rating reviews

Betterworks calls its review product Conversations. Your admin builds the templates and sets how often they run. Questions can be mandatory or optional. Answers can be a paragraph, a scale, a rating or a multiple choice. An admin can launch a scheduled conversation to a chosen group within a set timeframe. Managers and their direct reports can also start an anytime conversation when they choose.

Your admin decides who sees ratings. They can be visible to managers and above, or to employees and above. A scheduled conversation can include an admin review period. Participants send their responses to administrators first and share them with the other person afterwards. Betterworks’ Feedback product gathers feedback from an employee’s peers, manager and direct reports where applicable. Live goal progress shows inside each conversation.

Goals use objectives and key results. A goal can be visible to the whole organisation or private to chosen people or groups. The one-to-one meetings product gives each manager and employee a shared agenda, a goal view and an action tracker.

Betterworks calls its rating review meetings calibration. Leaders compare ratings and adjust them so they stay consistent across teams. HR teams and managers take part in the sessions. Rating reviews come with the $9 package as Anytime Calibration. It can run at any time, against more than 25 configurable talent fields. You must set up the Talent Profile first, which is the employee’s record of skills and performance. That set-up needs your Betterworks account team. The $9 package also adds succession and moving people into new roles, skills intelligence and a unified employee record.

The AI side has five features. The Performance Summary combines goals, conversations, feedback, recognition and calibration into one story of a person’s performance. It produces a summary, key achievements, strengths and areas for development. Employees, managers and HR each get a different version. The one-to-one summary pulls from completed agenda topics and notes and needs five or more completed topics. The AI does not read private notes. The skills feature suggests an employee’s skills from feedback, conversations and role data. The Feedback Summary turns feedback from a chosen period into text. It also gives an overview of the tone of the feedback. A goal writing assistant checks goals as people write them.

Betterworks connects to HR systems, which hold a company’s people records. These include ADP, BambooHR, Workday, UKG Pro, SAP SuccessFactors, Oracle and Zenefits. Each one keeps user records in Betterworks up to date. People can update goals and give recognition from Slack. From Microsoft Teams they can also give and request feedback. Further connections cover Jira, Salesforce, Zoom, Gmail, Udemy and single sign-on through Okta and others. Single sign-on lets staff log in with their company login. Betterworks sits on top of a main HR system. It keeps its own records of goals, reviews and feedback. Most enterprise customers go live within weeks of starting.

Betterworks also runs an MCP server. MCP is a link that lets AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot use your Betterworks data. It uses your existing Betterworks logins and permissions. Until 11 August 2026 every MCP tool was read-only. AI assistants can now create and update goals and post comments on them. These write actions need the user to confirm. Betterworks also has an API. That is a connection developers use to build their own links to other systems.

What Betterworks does well

You choose which AI features run

Every AI feature starts switched off until an admin turns it on. The admin picks which features to enable. Each feature can run for all employees or only for chosen groups, departments or regions. The platform works without the AI features.

The AI drafts and a person decides

Betterworks AI does not write reviews for you. Managers and employees write in their own voice. The AI assistant reminds users to check its output and accept it as their own before sending. AI suggestions from meetings do not update performance records on their own. Today, no automated tool, AI included, makes a decision with legal or similarly serious effects without a person involved.

The private AI model keeps your text inside Betterworks

The AI features can run on Betterworks’ own AI model, hosted in its own Amazon cloud environment. Customer text does not pass to an outside company through that route. Betterworks never uses customer employees’ data to train or fine-tune its AI. Every AI output is marked, and every recommendation comes with an explanation.

Rating reviews leave an audit trail

Anytime Calibration comes with the $9 package. It records how ratings shifted and why. It supports cross-functional and matrix teams. A June 2023 release added dashboards that show differences in ratings and coaching scores between groups. HR leaders can use them to ask how well calibration removes bias for each group.

EU data hosting and contract terms under EU and UK law

Betterworks hosts data in the US (North Virginia) and the EU (Ireland). It uses the EU centres for customers who need data stored in the EU. Betterworks has standard terms under California law, with courts in Santa Clara County. It also has an EU version under Irish law, with courts in Dublin. A UK version runs under UK law, with courts in London.

Security certificates and reporting

Betterworks holds ISO 27001 and Data Privacy Framework certificates. It also keeps up SOC 2 reporting. ISO 27001 and SOC 2 are independent checks of security practice. The Data Privacy Framework covers personal data that moves from the EU to the US.

Which companies is Betterworks built for?

Companies from 180 to more than 14,000 people use it

Betterworks adds the most value for organisations with more than 500 employees. It aims at mid-market and enterprise organisations. Crakmedia has 180 or more employees in Canada. Grupo Posadas has 14,000 or more in Mexico. Driving Force has 600 or more. Abarca Health has 750 or more. Arcesium has 2,500 or more.

Abarca Health calibrated 570 employees in three weeks

Abarca Health has more than 750 employees across the US and Puerto Rico. It reports 570 employees calibrated in three weeks. That took about 40 sessions. It also reports 100% completion of annual performance reviews with the AI assistant in Conversations.

Customers report 93% to 98% review completion

Arcesium reports 97% to 98% completion for annual and mid-year reviews. LivePerson has more than 1,000 employees in 19 countries. It reports a 93% on-time completion rate. It also reports a 50% to 75% cut in time spent on reviews.

The University of Phoenix reports over 70% check-in participation

The University of Phoenix has 3,400 employees. It reports over 70% participation in check-ins within a year.

It reaches frontline and hourly teams in 29 languages

Betterworks localises its product in 29 languages for large frontline and hourly workforces. Engage surveys go out by email, text message or kiosk. Engage is part of the Enterprise package.

Where Betterworks stops, from AI hosting to the contract

Betterworks bought Rypple, an AI-native platform for managers, on 2 June 2026. The two will first run as independent products in a phased integration. What you buy may change as they merge.

If you opt in to the OpenAI option, text can reach human reviewers

Betterworks offers a privately hosted AI model and a model hosted by an outside provider. The OpenAI option is opt-in. OpenAI is optional for US customers and not needed to use the platform. OpenAI gets your users’ text only if you opt in. Betterworks reviewed OpenAI, and OpenAI does not meet all of Betterworks’ own requirements. The outside model currently runs under OpenAI’s terms of service. Inputs may be shared with a person who reviews them by hand, including contractors around the world. Betterworks tells you not to enter sensitive information, including personal data, because others may view it. OpenAI will not use business data to train its models.

AI fees may start later, and checking the AI is your job

Betterworks may charge fees for the AI features at any time on prior notice. The $8 package includes AI assistance today. You must check the accuracy of any AI output and must not rely on Betterworks to do it. You alone are responsible for making AI content follow the law.

Meeting transcripts have limits in the first release

Conversational Intelligence pulls Zoom meeting transcripts without a bot joining the call. The first release has no automatic transcript expiry, so transcripts stay until a user deletes them. It has no scoping by department, group or meeting type. It has no series-level consent and no Sensitive Meeting control. Native Microsoft Teams support is not available and is marked coming soon. The Zoom link is meant for users with an eligible paid Zoom account. A Zoom administrator must switch on AI Companion Meetings and transcript retention. Manual uploads and pasted transcripts skip the Zoom consent check.

The contract renews automatically and fees are not refundable

Betterworks renews each order automatically. To stop it, either side must give notice at least 90 days before the term ends. Betterworks may raise renewal fees with at least 120 days’ notice. All fees are non-refundable. Fees fall due within 30 days of invoice unless the order form says otherwise.

The uptime promise has one remedy, and live support runs on US hours

Betterworks promises 99.9% availability in any calendar month. If it misses that, the only remedy is the compensation its service level agreement sets. The agreement is version 2.3, dated 22 March 2022. Initial support response time is 8 business hours. Live support by email or web runs from 5am to 8pm Eastern Time, Monday to Friday, except US public holidays. Each party’s liability for one incident is capped. The cap is the amount paid or due in the twelve months before it. Breach of confidentiality is the exception.

Betterworks’ own pages give different deletion times

The terms say Betterworks deletes customer data within 30 days of the end of the contract. The help centre gives 7 days from the contract end date for all data. During the term, you can get your data in Betterworks’ standard export format or another format you agree. The help centre also says a deletion request does not delete content from activities in the application. That covers objectives, conversations and feedback.

You may store only some kinds of personal data

Betterworks limits personal data in scope of the contract to name, work email, title, office location and office phone number. You must not pass sensitive personal information to Betterworks or store it on the site. That includes health or medical information and biometric data. Betterworks may combine your metadata and usage data to improve its services and write reports on use of them.

What Betterworks costs and what each package adds

Betterworks publishes three packages. Performance costs $8 per user per month. It includes Conversations for review cycles and AI assistance. Performance + Talent Intelligence costs $9 per user per month. It adds Anytime Calibration for rating reviews, succession, skills intelligence and a unified employee record. The Enterprise package has a custom price and adds Engage, the survey product, on top of the $9 package.

At $8, every 1,000 users cost $8,000 a month. At $9, they cost $9,000 a month. Both figures leave out implementation and support.

Price depends on how many people you have and which packages you buy. Implementation and support level add to it. Implementation is a one-time cost on top of the monthly price. Signature Support costs extra. You can start with Performance, or with Engagement alone, and expand later.

You could also run review steps with agents built on your own systems. We have mapped what that looks like. The HR Agent Map

Thirteen questions to ask Betterworks

  1. Is the OpenAI option switched off for our account, and how does the contract say so? Good answer: A written clause that no text goes to OpenAI unless we opt in.
  2. You let customers turn AI off in some parts of the solution. Which AI features stay on? Good answer: A full list, with the reason each one stays on.
  3. Does the $8 Performance package include any rating review meetings, or only the $9 package? Good answer: A clear answer on which package carries Anytime Calibration, shown in the demo.
  4. Will you agree in writing that no AI fee starts during our contract term? Good answer: A clause that fixes AI at no extra cost for the whole term.
  5. Can a user exclude one meeting from AI processing today? Your product page says yes and your help centre says no. Good answer: A clear yes or no, shown live in the demo.
  6. How long do meeting transcripts stay, and who can delete them? Good answer: A retention period we set, not one that waits for each user to delete.
  7. Does contract-end deletion take 7 days or 30 days? Good answer: One figure in the contract.
  8. If an employee asks for deletion, are their objectives, conversations and feedback deleted too? Good answer: Yes, with the steps and the time frame written down.
  9. What cap will you put on renewal price rises? Good answer: A percentage cap in the order form.
  10. Can support hours cover our working day? Good answer: Support hours that match our time zone, in the order form.
  11. Can the remedy for downtime be more than the standard compensation? Good answer: A written remedy beyond the standard one, or a clear no.
  12. You bought Rypple in June 2026. Which product do we get, and what happens to our contract if you merge them? Good answer: A named product and a written plan for any move.
  13. What is the total in year one, with implementation, Signature Support and integrations? Good answer: A single year-one total that prices each item.

Alternatives to Betterworks

15Five, Lattice, Culture Amp, PerformYard, ClearCompany, BambooHR and Workday sell performance reviews too. Some HR systems also include review tools.

A Betterworks Performance seat costs $8 a month, or $9 with rating reviews through Performance + Talent Intelligence. Lattice charges $10 per seat per month for Performance, with calibration included. Lattice also sets a $4,000 minimum annual agreement. 15Five Perform costs $11 per user per month, billed annually. PerformYard costs $5 to $15 per person per month, depending on employee count and products. Culture Amp quotes Perform on request.

Implementation at Betterworks is a one-time fee. Lattice has no extra cost for change management or implementation of its performance product. PerformYard has no extra fees for onboarding or training, and includes HR system connections and single sign-on in every plan.

Lattice includes its AI Agent in every base product. Culture Amp includes its AI Coach in every plan. 15Five includes AI-Assisted Reviews in its Total Platform package and its Perform and Goals package. Workday charges for the work its AI completes through Flex Credits, not by the number of employees.

BambooHR is an HR system for small and mid-sized businesses. Its Pro plan includes one-to-one meetings and 360 review cycles, and starts at $17.50 per employee per month. Workday describes performance as one part of a connected talent platform. ClearCompany sells performance as one stage of a talent package. Its ClearGrow package combines performance, engagement, learning and compensation. Implementation help is a separate package, priced on request.

If you already run an HR system, check its review tools before you buy. You can compare the options in the buyer’s guide.
