Review rounds, goals and 1:1s that read employee records in Rippling

Rippling Performance Management is a set of apps. The apps are Goals, Review Cycles and 1:1s. Rippling builds them on one shared employee data platform, together with the main HR system and payroll. The performance features sit in one platform, which keeps the performance data consistent.

A review round can include four kinds of review. They are the manager’s review of a team member, a review of the manager, a self-review and a peer review. The admin who runs the round picks which kinds to use. The admin can also add calibration or pay stages. In a calibration meeting, leaders check that managers rate people on the same scale.

The admin sets who is reviewed using employee details such as department, tenure or work location. Review questions can change by any employee detail, using groups Rippling calls Supergroups. Customers can also set rules for what happens when someone’s manager changed recently. A manager writes the evaluation of a team member and sees that person’s goal completion beside it.

Milestone reviews are a Review Cycles feature. They hold feedback conversations more often than formal reviews. They can start an evaluation from any data in Rippling. Examples are 30, 60 and 90 day check-ins and reviews on an employee’s start date anniversary.

Calibration uses drag-and-drop nine-box grids and customisable worksheets. A nine-box grid places each employee by performance and potential. During calibration, Rippling controls who can see which ratings automatically. Its reports can also break down performance ratings by employee demographics.

Goals can be assigned, tracked and shared. They also appear in performance reviews. People can give and ask for feedback inside Rippling or in Slack. That feedback then appears at review time. In a 1:1 meeting, the employee’s goals and past feedback appear during the conversation. Managers assign and track action items there.

Rippling fills in pay recommendations from the company’s pay policies. It also uses context such as calibration results and length of service. When you set raise guidelines for a review round, Rippling advises managers on how to split their team’s raise budget. Pay decisions can then move from Review Cycles into Rippling Payroll, with approval rules.

Rippling tells buyers to use Rippling AI for insights such as pay gaps, manager effectiveness and internal moves. It works from Rippling data plus data from tools you connect. Each answer links to the records behind it.

Rippling AI follows each person’s permissions and asks before it acts. It uses the permissions each person already has in Rippling. It asks a person to confirm before it carries out an action it proposes. An admin can switch AI features on or off for the whole platform. Rippling does not use usage data to train its AI models. Rippling gives an example of an HR manager preparing for calibration. The manager asks Rippling AI to find the managers to include and check Google Calendar. Rippling AI then sends invites and drafts emails in Gmail.

Reporting lines, an AI certification and pay recommendations work in your favour

Review rounds read roles and reporting lines from the platform

Review Cycles takes roles and reporting lines from Rippling. That data is already there. Review rounds follow people who change roles or managers.

Rippling is certified for managing AI

The standard is ISO 42001. Rippling holds that certification.

Managers start pay decisions from a suggestion

Each suggestion comes from company pay policy.

Three customers, from 50 to over 600 employees

LightForce grew from 36 to over 600 employees

LightForce grew from 36 to over 600 employees across six countries. It added Performance Management as a Rippling customer. Rippling reports a 4x decrease in the time LightForce needs to administer reviews. Rippling puts LightForce in the 500 to 999 employee group.

AssuranceLab had no formal review process

AssuranceLab has 50 to 99 employees. It reports 96% more review participation with Rippling’s tool.

Bathhouse linked support results to pay

Bathhouse has 335 employees. Its payroll manager used Rippling AI and Rippling’s Data Cloud tool to build a dashboard. The dashboard connects support ticket closure rates in Zendesk to payroll data. Managers get a live view of how pay and performance relate. Rippling ties this result to Rippling AI and Data Cloud. Ask whether Performance Management reports can show the same link.

The core platform, other products and the AI features all need checking

Performance Management comes only with the core Rippling Platform

Rippling sells each HR product on its own, but only with the required core platform. Some Rippling products carry a monthly base fee. A UK reseller prices the core platform that way. Add the core platform cost when you compare Rippling with a tool you buy alone.

Some features sit in other Rippling products

Pay decisions can move into Rippling Payroll. Rippling also offers Headcount Planning, Surveys, Recruiting and learning courses (a learning management system) beside Performance Management. Ask which of them sit inside the Performance Management price. In May 2024 Rippling described a future plan to feed GitHub and Salesforce data into Goals. Ask whether that plan is on sale today.

Talent Signal reads employees’ work

Rippling announced Talent Signal, an AI tool that reviews the first 90 days of a new hire’s work. It creates a performance signal for each employee. It reads engineers’ code contributions, sales teams’ call transcripts, and support agents’ customer emails and chats. A manager gets a detailed report when an employee receives a High Potential or Pay Attention signal. Rippling promises Talent Signal will never replace a manager’s judgement of the whole person. Customers were invited to its Early Access programme on 27 December 2024. That release was trained on data from Rippling’s own workforce and from alpha-test customers who opted in. Ask whether Talent Signal is part of Performance Management and whether you can switch it off.

Rippling AI in Slack can reach any Rippling data

Rippling AI in Slack reads the thread where someone mentions it, including shared files. It also has access to any data in Rippling. Ask who can mention it in Slack and what review data that person can already see.

All data sits in US data centres

Rippling keeps all data in the US, in Amazon Web Services data centres. These span multiple availability zones. Each zone is a separate site in one region. If you employ people outside the US, ask where your staff data is stored and processed.

Rippling gives a custom quote, mostly per employee per month

Rippling gives a custom quote once you say which services you need. Most Rippling products cost a fee per employee per month. Some also carry a monthly base fee.

Generation Digital is a reseller in the UK government’s G-Cloud 15 catalogue. It prices Rippling as a monthly base fee for the core platform plus a fixed amount per employee per month. Generation Digital also builds the price from separate parts and needs a custom quote.

Rippling prices each product with AI features from $36 per employee per month. Select products start lower. Ask whether Performance Management is priced at $36 or lower.

You could also run review steps with agents built on your own systems. We have mapped what that looks like. The HR Agent Map

  8. Where is our staff data stored and processed, and which outside companies handle it? Good answer: A named country for each system and a full list of companies.
  9. What uptime promise, renewal price limit and notice period will the order form contain? Good answer: Three written figures on the order form for our company.
  10. How do we take our review history out when the contract ends? Good answer: The export format and the number of days, both in the contract.

Alternatives to Rippling Performance Management

Alternatives to Rippling include BambooHR, ADP, Lattice, 15Five and Leapsome, or buying nothing.

BambooHR’s Pro plan includes 360 review rounds, where several colleagues give feedback, and 1:1s. Its pricing card puts Pro at $17 per employee per month. Its pricing FAQ gives a starting price of $17.50, so ask BambooHR which figure applies. ADP sells Performance Management as an add-on to ADP Workforce Now. ADP reveals the price only after you log in to its Marketplace.

Lattice, 15Five and Leapsome each charge per person for their performance tools. Lattice Performance costs $10 per seat per month, with a $4,000 minimum annual agreement. 15Five Perform costs $11 per user per month, billed annually. Leapsome Performance Reviews cost 7 euros per employee per month on its price estimator. Leapsome always includes its HR platform in the plan.
