HealthStream
HealthStream Learning Center is a training system for healthcare organisations. It assigns required courses, tracks who finished them and keeps the records for audits. Under its data agreement, HealthStream provides it only in the United States and Canada.
The Learning Center is a cloud training system for healthcare organisations. It assigns required courses, tracks completion and keeps audit records.
You run a healthcare organisation in the United States or Canada. You need required training assigned by job title, location and department. You want a large course library and CE hours under one contract. You want ready-built connections to systems such as Epic and Workday.
You need a price before a sales call. You have learners outside the United States and Canada. Most of your training is not for healthcare work.
HealthStream covers pricing and implementation in its demo. Old US government orders give a guide. One 2024 order for a training subscription totalled $39,706.20 over three years.
What the Learning Center does with required training
Required training needs a deadline and proof that people finished it. The Learning Center sets the first and keeps the second. It runs in the cloud. An administrator assigns courses to people, groups or departments. Each assignment can carry a deadline and a mandatory mark.
Staff finish their required courses in the system. It tracks progress, completion status, time spent and whether training meets the rules. HR and compliance teams track, assign and report on training in one place. It trains in person, online and in a mix of both. It has a mobile-friendly design and an offline mode.
Reporting comes in two tiers. Insights offers daily report scheduling and up to one month of scheduled report storage. Insights+ offers hourly scheduling and up to one year of storage. Insights+ also sends data by secure file transfer (SFTP) and scheduled email. My Team gives leaders a view of team progress across compliance, training and performance metrics. Our market guide places HealthStream next to the rest of the market.
Where it earns its place
Required courses go to the right people by job, place and date
Administrators assign courses by department, job title, location, date or any other custom field. One assignment can cover everyone with a given job title or location. Administrators can add site, department or job category information to HealthStream’s regulatory courses. That fits each course to your own policies.
Records for an audit build up as the work is done
Digital attendance tools keep records ready for audit for classroom sessions. Course updates and version control keep training in line with changes to the rules. The hStream for Learning product tracks licences in all 50 US states. It sends an alert when one is close to expiry. The proof for an audit builds up as staff finish training.
One contract can bring a large course library
HealthStream’s content marketplace holds over 35,000 courses. The Learning Center also gives access to courses from other publishers. The hStream for Learning product adds 100 or more continuing education (CE) hours. It also adds over 600 product courses. Both come at no added cost.
Who gets the most from it
Healthcare employers get the closest match
The Learning Center is a learning management system for healthcare organisations. HealthStream works with more than 5,000 of them. Education leaders use it to build competency across clinical and non-clinical teams. If most of your staff are not in healthcare, the fit is weaker.
Baptist Health Floyd, at about 2,500 staff, is the example
It has about 2,500 employees and has used HealthStream for learning management since 2003. It reports that required-course time fell from an entire day to about 2.5 hours after the Learning Center. The Learning Center adapts from 50 to 50,000 learners. Ask for a reference of your own size.
It connects to systems a hospital already runs, such as Epic and Workday
hStream offers ready-built connections to existing systems such as Epic and Workday. HealthStream’s developer tools connect an HR system such as Workday and an electronic health record system (EHR) such as Epic. A finished required course can trigger an action in the EHR. HealthStream can also send an automatic notice to an outside system when a person finishes a course.
Six places to check before you sign
Each point below decides what you should get in writing. The first one matters most for any employer with staff abroad.
The services run in the United States and Canada only
HealthStream’s data agreement provides the services only in the United States and Canada. HealthStream also does not market the services to customers or residents in the EU or outside the US and Canada. Suppose you let staff in the EU, Switzerland or the UK use the services. Then you are responsible for the privacy laws that apply. Ask which countries it will support in writing before you roll out to staff abroad.
Tests built inside a course file were outside Learning Center reports in 2024
The standard e-learning file format is called SCORM. Authoring Center customers can add SCORM activities to courses. In July 2024, tests built inside a SCORM activity were outside the Learning Center’s test and evaluation reports. If you plan to buy ready-made courses with their own tests, ask how those results reach your reports today.
Its Terms of Use grant HealthStream a wide licence
Under HealthStream’s Terms of Use, the user grants HealthStream an unrestricted, royalty-free, irrevocable licence. In plain words, HealthStream pays nothing for it, the licence has no stated limit, and a user cannot withdraw it. It includes the right to provide, maintain, protect and improve the services, including developing new ones. HealthStream does not sell or share personal information. It may process aggregated or de-identified personal information. It may also process transmitted data as an independent controller where law permits. Send both documents to your lawyer.
Ask who supplies the AI model inside hStream AI
hStream AI is built into the hStream platform. HealthStream gives no model supplier and no training data for it. Jane is a tool that applies HealthStream’s own competency framework to measure nursing expertise and progression. HealthStream provides a list of the other companies that handle your data on request. Ask for that list, and ask which of them touch the AI features.
Sign-in is changing, and support hours are given two ways
HealthStream is moving customers to a new single sign-in technology. Customers must finish the move by 14 December 2026. On support, the Learning Center page promises 24/7 support, community forums and learning libraries. The customer resources page puts customer service at 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central time, holidays excluded. Success management is tiered by contract. Ask which hours your contract gives you.
The learner view and the performance tools are separate products
The Learning Experience is a separate product for employees, where they explore upskilling and track progress toward new roles. The Performance Center links learning completions to performance milestones through its Learning Center connection. Ask what each one costs.
You get a quote, not a price
HealthStream covers pricing and implementation in its demo. That makes the quote the first thing to get. Compare it line by line.
Public US government orders show how far the price moves with the size of the deal. They are not your quote. A 2008 Department of Justice order covered 14 users and committed $1,067.20. A 2011 Air Force order priced the Learning Center at $13.02 a unit for 2,500 units. It sat in a set with two HeartCode courses, and the whole set came to $69,500. A 2023 Health and Human Services order for a learning management web service totals $1,096,452.75. Work runs to 31 December 2026.
A 2024 order from the same department is nearer the middle. It bought a web-based online subscription for training and education. It runs from 31 May 2024 to 31 May 2027 and totals $39,706.20. The size of your deal decides the price. Only a quote will tell you yours.
Some costs depend on your contract. Success management is tiered by contract. The Video Complete package includes one virtual classroom and 2,500 live viewing hours. HealthStream guides implementation. Ask whether that is part of the quote. Ask which reporting tier the quote includes.
On leaving, HealthStream deletes personal information at your request on termination, unless law requires it to keep some. It keeps personal information for the minimum period needed for its purpose. Ask for the exit steps and the retention period in writing before you sign.
You could also run training steps with agents built on your own systems. We have mapped what that looks like. The HR Agent Map
What to ask HealthStream first
- What does the Learning Center cost at our headcount, with licence, content, reporting, support and setup priced as separate lines? Good answer: One written quote with every line apart.
- Which reporting tier is in the quote, and how long are scheduled reports kept? Good answer: A named tier, with the storage period written down.
- Which of our courses use their own tests, and will those results reach Learning Center reports? Good answer: Yes, in writing, for each course.
- Which company supplies the AI model in hStream AI, and is our data used to train it? Good answer: A named company and a written no.
- What does the licence in your Terms of Use cover for our staff’s data? Good answer: An answer in writing that limits it to running the service.
- Which support hours apply to us, 24/7 or 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central? Good answer: The hours for our tier, written into the contract.
- Will our sign-in already be on the new technology from the first day? Good answer: Yes, with the move done before we go live.
- Can you serve learners outside the United States and Canada? Good answer: A yes with the countries named, or a clear no.
Alternatives to HealthStream
Four alternatives deserve a quote beside HealthStream. They are Relias, Docebo, TalentLMS and Workday. Buying nothing is a fifth route.
Relias answers a security question. HealthStream’s HITRUST certification covers CredentialStream and other systems that HealthStream specifies. Relias is compliant with the HITRUST Common Security Framework. Ask each vendor which products its certificate covers, and get the Learning Center named in writing.
Docebo suits an employer with learners in more places than the United States and Canada. HealthStream provides its services only in those two countries. Docebo supports more than 50 languages. Its hosting regions are the USA, EU, UK, Canada, India and Australia, chosen in the agreement.
TalentLMS gives a different answer on AI. Its AI features use third-party large language models. Lesson content and user input are briefly processed. TalentLMS has opted out of training use, and it discards input and content shortly after processing. HealthStream gives no model supplier for hStream AI. TalentLMS Core costs $119 a month for 1 to 40 users. A free plan covers up to 5 users and 10 courses.
HealthStream sells the Learning Center, the Learning Experience and the Performance Center apart. Workday Learning is built on Workday HCM, so learning sits beside wider workforce data. Bronson Healthcare has 8,500 employees. It reports onboarding 1,200 people remotely over nine months with Workday Learning. It also reports bringing 500 safety and compliance courses down to 6.
Buying nothing yet is a real option if you hold SCORM courses whose test results you already report on elsewhere. In July 2024, tests built inside a SCORM activity were outside the Learning Center’s test and evaluation reports. Check that before you move them.
